PART OF OUR EARTH TO TABLE DOCUMENTARY SERIES
See The Homestead team in action in our latest Earth to Table short film, a cinematic look at how they’re rewriting the rules of sustainable fine dining.
The Homestead’s Approach to Sustainability
The Homestead in Goathland is the definition of hyper-local dining. Husband-and-wife team Pete and Cecily grow a remarkable amount of their fruit and vegetables just steps from the kitchen, harvesting ingredients at peak ripeness and serving them within hours.
Their goal is simple: to put as much home-grown produce on the plate as possible and only source additional ingredients from trusted local suppliers who share their values of transparency and sustainability. Rather than participate in the globalised food system that ships ingredients thousands of miles, they choose to champion what can be grown on their own patch of land and celebrate the flavours that come with true seasonality.
The Garden: Where the Menu Begins
The Homestead’s garden is the heart of the restaurant. Rows of vegetables, fruit bushes and edible flowers grow just outside the dining room, alongside an “edible garden” filled with herbs, walking onions, edible flowers and other small-but-mighty crops. Bees and insects move constantly through the space, playing their part in a thriving ecosystem that makes the garden so productive.
It’s here that Pete and Cecily also grow the blackcurrants whose leaves they turn into their signature blackcurrant ice cream, as well as the flowers that brighten their dining tables. Inside the restaurant, a board proudly lists which ingredients on that day’s menu were harvested from the garden; a quiet but powerful reminder of how deeply rooted each dish is in the land.
Home Life & Hospitality: “Come As You Are”
The Homestead really is a homestead. The restaurant sits right next to Pete and Cecily’s family home, and the warmth of that connection flows naturally into the dining experience. Despite the finesse of their fine-dining tasting menu, guests are encouraged to come exactly as they are, whether that's in muddy boots from a hike across the moors or dressed up for a celebration. The atmosphere is relaxed, grounded, and refreshingly unpretentious.
Their commitment to family and balance shapes everything. Pete and Cecily make time every evening to have dinner together with their two young children before service begins. That gentleness and humanity spills into the restaurant, where guests feel less like customers and more like friends welcomed into a home full of care.
Plated Dishes: Seasonal, Elegant, and Deeply Rooted in Place
The Homestead’s dishes are a beautiful reflection of the seasons: elegant canapés that showcase herbs and flowers from the garden, perfectly cooked fish and meat courses enhanced with preserved ingredients, and thoughtful desserts that celebrate the fruit grown just metres from the kitchen door.
Each plate is designed to highlight flavour, texture, and provenance - always anchored in North Yorkshire’s landscape. Wines are thoughtfully paired to match the changing menu, elevating the experience without overshadowing the ingredients themselves.
